What are Tripods?
A tripod can be many things.
As used in this site, it refers to a pet who has through Illness or Accident, lost a leg.
These pets then go on to prove they didn't need that 'extra leg' anyway.

If your vet has recommended amputation for your pet, or recently performed it.. don't panic. Please see the Amputee Caretakers Guide and consider joining the VAS Support Group. Although intended for VAS sufferers, they also gladly accept other Tripods, and provide excellent support for the Hu-Moms.

A very common cause in cats for the loss of one limb is treatment for VAS.
Please see my VAS page for more information on that.
Most reasons for a loss of limb are over and done with after recovery from the amputation. VAS, however, is a monster which may recur... As a result, A portion of the proceeds of my Tripod Calendar, despite containing pets who lost their limbs for other reasons, goes to fund VAS research.

Below, you'll find more information on the Tripod Cats, and the other illness which caused their condition... Osteosarcoma.

About Osteosarcoma in cats. Osteosarcoma is a cancer that affects bones, and, like VAS, must be aggresively treated. It is rare in cats, but not uncommon in dogs. Properly treated osteosarcoma in dogs may extend their lives by about a year. Fortunately, a cat who recieves proper treatment may have a longer lifespan.

This is Miss Moe.
Moe lost her left front leg to Osteosarcoma.
Miss Moe was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma in December 2004 at the age of 12, and underwent amputation in January 2005. As of May 2008, her cancer has not resurfaced, and she is living a happy and healthy life.
Her Hu-Mom found the VAS support group, and they extended a warm welcome to them, and helped with the difficult decision to attempt treatment on a cat of her age.
Her Hu-mom hasn't regretted that decision for a moment since, and neither has Moe.
Miss Moe is the reason I (CAT of CATscratches) discovered VAS. Moe was born in my home, before finding a forever home with my own mother.
